    M. Thatcher memorial Denial of Service attack* – normal service hopefully restored

    ByDMcA April 12, 2013April 18, 2013

No doubt to signal their displeasure at the public money about to be wasted on Mrs Thatcher’s funeral, some b*st*rds somewhere are mounting a huge attack on WordPress sites, of which this is one. This is the reason the site has been slow or impossible to access  in the last 24 hrs. A little tinkering…

Plus ça change, plus c’est vraiment différent

    ByDMcA April 10, 2013

On the way to our place in France, I was able to reflect on the wholesale changes this country has undergone, seemingly collectively, in the areas of road safely and health.  There are few other nations that seem to be able to do this.   It’s almost exactly a 500 mile journey to our French…

RX-100 long exposure shots from Cape Town

    ByDMcA March 26, 2013

A few final seascape shots from Cape Town using the ability of the RX-100 to capture long exposure times, and hence render the sea in interesting ways.     A bit of technical jiggery is associated with these shots, so you can skip over the next section to the end if you only want to…

Hitler and I learn of the impending demise of Google Reader

    ByDMcA March 25, 2013March 27, 2013

While Hitler makes his feelings about this incredibly dumb decision by Google very clear, mine are more conflicted*.       I have previously mentioned regularly scanning many web sites, and was one day going to describe them and how I get to do that.  Sadly, Google may take away the ability to (easily) do…

Possibly the most irritating thing about British Airways.

    ByDMcA March 16, 2013March 17, 2013

In which listening to some opera brings back a wave of forgotten memories about the world’s most irksome airline     In my business life I flew more or less exclusively on American Airways when commuting to the US.  I racked up over 7 million AAdvantage miles with them, and I like to say they…

More Cape Town Photos – spot the S3 one

    ByDMcA March 15, 2013March 16, 2013

Still carrying the RX-100 around everywhere and getting the odd nice shot when the opportunity presents itself.  But one of these photos was taken with my Samsung Galaxy S3 phone.  Can you guess which?       Over the last few weeks I have been mulling over whether I really need a big camera any…

Latest News September 2021

“Still alive and able to get about quite well” is the overall report.  We are all fine, albeit with the usual ups and downs.  The site has been spiffed up a bit, and should be faster and easier to navigate.  I might even put some new content on – see What’s happening? for more info.

On other fronts, I think my photography techniques and images have improved quite a lot  over the last 4 years, and I have discovered a fascination for the technical and technique challenges of photographing birds in flight.  Have a look at mcaughtry.photo to see if you agree.  I have also discovered the delights of artisan coffee, and have built a spiffy state of the art digital audiophile music system, all of which I may write about in the future. So no shortage of things to interest or infuriate me.

But most of all my life has been enriched and inspired by my two beautiful and funny grandchildren, 5 and 2 years old as I write.  Why couldn’t I have been like this when I was their age I ask myself?  I am privileged to know them and my heart skips on each encounter.
