On Portability – Systems Part 5: Android keyboards

    ByDMcA July 27, 2011September 9, 2012

The last post (mournful trumpet sound) on Portability covered the core systems and browsing experience of the Transformer tablet. Looking at things is a reasonable pleasant and uncomplicated experience on a tablet. Where it gets frustrating is actually typing something, and after that, trying to edit. I think many people who use the iPad came…

On Portability – Systems Part 4: Android software (part a)

    ByDMcA July 26, 2011September 9, 2012

The prior post was on the hardware of the interesting Asus Transformer Android tablet.  In this post I’ll cover the software.  I’m only going to do this from the perspective of what I actually do with the system, and I’ll therefore cover the apps which (after a lot of trial and error) work best for…

On Portability – Systems Part 3: the Asus Transformer:hardware

    ByDMcA July 25, 2011September 9, 2012

In previous posts on Portability I’ve covered what I don’t like or don’t any more use.  This time we’ll look at something I actually do like, the Asus Transformer Android tablet.  Actually I more than like this thing, I’m pretty much permanently glued to it.  Without doubt it’s the best piece of technology I have used so far for portable…

On Portability – Systems Part 2: Why I don’t much like Apple

    ByDMcA July 23, 2011September 9, 2012

This is the second in a series of posts about portable systems – focusing mainly on Android technology. As I mentioned in the prior post, that begs the question of ‘why not Apple (or IOS)’? So in this post, I will list the reasons I prefer not to use their stuff (if I don’t have…

On Portability – Systems Part 1: Breakthroughs

    ByDMcA July 20, 2011September 9, 2012

On a brisk Spring day in March 1996 your correspondent was excitedly waiting outside the Aladdin’s cave that was (and is) J&R World in down-town Manhattan.  At the opening of the store I rushed in and bought one of the first Palm Pilot 1000 PDAs sold.  The Palm is largely forgotten now, but 15 years ago it was a miracle…

    London lunchtime chamber music venues

    ByDMcA July 15, 2011July 21, 2011

Nice places to listen to chamber music at lunchtime in London. In a previous post I noted that it’s possible to listen to chamber music at lunchtime almost every day (except Saturday) in London. Here’s a short overview of each of the locations for those that might want to give them a try. I include…

Latest News September 2021

“Still alive and able to get about quite well” is the overall report.  We are all fine, albeit with the usual ups and downs.  The site has been spiffed up a bit, and should be faster and easier to navigate.  I might even put some new content on – see What’s happening? for more info.

On other fronts, I think my photography techniques and images have improved quite a lot  over the last 4 years, and I have discovered a fascination for the technical and technique challenges of photographing birds in flight.  Have a look at mcaughtry.photo to see if you agree.  I have also discovered the delights of artisan coffee, and have built a spiffy state of the art digital audiophile music system, all of which I may write about in the future. So no shortage of things to interest or infuriate me.

But most of all my life has been enriched and inspired by my two beautiful and funny grandchildren, 5 and 2 years old as I write.  Why couldn’t I have been like this when I was their age I ask myself?  I am privileged to know them and my heart skips on each encounter.
