    Goebbels’ heirs

    ByDMcA February 28, 2012March 4, 2012

Musings on the occasional use of truth in politics. Nearly ten years ago, in the autumn of 2002, while I was flying from (I think) Chicago back to NYC, I had one of the most dramatic and disturbing conversations I ever experienced in the US.  My practice over many years had been never to talk…

How to gain weight by drinking beaver anal gland juice

    ByDMcA February 21, 2012March 3, 2012

A few fun food facts for you today – to both inform and revolt. Despite my tall and generally stick-like appearance, I can stack on the weight – in fact at this height (6’4″), my weight has varied by 56 pounds (25kg, or the weight of a good sized springer spaniel).  I maintain in fact…

The Otter Trail 2012: Photo album

    ByDMcA February 15, 2012September 26, 2012

For years I have been wanting to go on the Otter trail – probably the most famous trek in South Africa, and certainly one of the world’s great coastal trails.  Thanks to some great organizational work by M*rtin, four of us walked the trail last week.  A magnificent experience, with great company, and incredible seascapes. …

    Wizards of Wonk

    ByDMcA January 19, 2012January 24, 2012

The saintly Paul Krugman (of whom more later) often helpfully tags his columns in the NYT with the descriptor “wonkish”, or “slightly wonkish”, signifying some more or less baffling piece of economics theory.  I like ‘wonkish’ more than say,  ‘nerdy’, probably because if Krugman likes it, then it’s good enough for me. I mention this…

Some Malaysia travel snaps (with a little work from LR3 and Sagelight)

    ByDMcA January 17, 2012September 26, 2012

As is my practice now, I only took my little Fuji F900EXR camera with me on our recent trip to Malaysia and Bali.  I continue to be impressed with this tiny but powerful camera, and have recently been exploring what be done with a little further processing.  Over the last 6 months or so, I…

A Night at Ril’s Steakhouse (vegetarians should not view this post)

    ByDMcA January 11, 2012January 13, 2012

Those that prefer plants turn your eyes away now – This steak is medium rare! We finally got to sit down at the Chickadee and hubby Mr K’s steakhouse last Friday, and a very pleasant evening it was too, defined by the awesome steaks and other fine food on offer.  Shown above is the 1kg…

Latest News September 2021

“Still alive and able to get about quite well” is the overall report.  We are all fine, albeit with the usual ups and downs.  The site has been spiffed up a bit, and should be faster and easier to navigate.  I might even put some new content on – see What’s happening? for more info.

On other fronts, I think my photography techniques and images have improved quite a lot  over the last 4 years, and I have discovered a fascination for the technical and technique challenges of photographing birds in flight.  Have a look at mcaughtry.photo to see if you agree.  I have also discovered the delights of artisan coffee, and have built a spiffy state of the art digital audiophile music system, all of which I may write about in the future. So no shortage of things to interest or infuriate me.

But most of all my life has been enriched and inspired by my two beautiful and funny grandchildren, 5 and 2 years old as I write.  Why couldn’t I have been like this when I was their age I ask myself?  I am privileged to know them and my heart skips on each encounter.
