    The Dales in January

    ByDMcA February 14, 2013February 16, 2013

Some photographs by way of a change of subject from technology.  These shots are of the gorgeous English Dales countryside on a trip to Aysgarth Falls, during one of the wettest and stormiest periods in recent memory, so everything was green and wet (except Norman).  Very English.     As is our wont we spent…

Windows 8 – Pentium 4 warning and Media Centre offer

    ByDMcA January 30, 2013January 30, 2013

In the last post I extolled the virtues of Windows 8 and recommended that you buy before the current offer expires at the end of January 2013.  There is one more bargain on offer that also expires tomorrow, but before rushing – be aware there is a problem with Pentium 4 class PCs and before. …

Microsoft XP warning – act now and get a bargain (this is not an advert!)

    ByDMcA January 21, 2013January 21, 2013

I meant to write this post last month – and now this warning is very late – for reasons that will become clear below.  But in summary – if you run Microsoft  XP on your PC, read this post urgently – it could save you a lot of money! Many years ago my role was…

    Sailing at 120kph – “that’s it… we’ve smashed the *rs* off it”

    ByDMcA November 23, 2012November 23, 2012

British design breakthrough – fastest ever speed attained in a sailing boat.  The video is amazing, as is the story, which reveals interesting differences between the French and British approaches to the problem.  Not to mention the Australian approach to announcing the record-breaking nautical mile run (see headline). Who knew there had been a 40…

    Petraus – beyond credibility

    ByDMcA November 14, 2012November 23, 2012

This story continues to surpass all normal levels of conjecture. The reported 20-30,000 page Kelly/Allen exchange for example would average around 20 pages of emails a day.  To further illustrate this, only one of these clips is a spoof.   Can you tell which it is? By the way, both are  very puerile and likely to…

How to Be the Most Helpful Slave You Can Be for Me and My Baby

    ByDMcA November 12, 2012November 12, 2012

On one or other of my Android tablets I scan around 90 web sites daily, just to keep in touch. In a future post I’ll show how I do that, and what sites I currently like most. Because it’s easy, I post links I particularly like to Facebook. I recently discovered that it’s just as…

Latest News September 2021

“Still alive and able to get about quite well” is the overall report.  We are all fine, albeit with the usual ups and downs.  The site has been spiffed up a bit, and should be faster and easier to navigate.  I might even put some new content on – see What’s happening? for more info.

On other fronts, I think my photography techniques and images have improved quite a lot  over the last 4 years, and I have discovered a fascination for the technical and technique challenges of photographing birds in flight.  Have a look at mcaughtry.photo to see if you agree.  I have also discovered the delights of artisan coffee, and have built a spiffy state of the art digital audiophile music system, all of which I may write about in the future. So no shortage of things to interest or infuriate me.

But most of all my life has been enriched and inspired by my two beautiful and funny grandchildren, 5 and 2 years old as I write.  Why couldn’t I have been like this when I was their age I ask myself?  I am privileged to know them and my heart skips on each encounter.
