The fallen tree in the forest – my photographs and Flickr

    ByDMcA May 27, 2014December 5, 2014

A musing on the process of taking and then showing photographs, and a partial explanation on why I have been somewhat absent in recent weeks.       Note – if at any time you just want to see some photographs instead of reading the post – click the big Flickr logo above, or this…

On Portability – can a phone substitute for a camera?

    ByDMcA April 21, 2014April 21, 2014

My recent adventures with the world’s only phone capable of taking RAW images.  How does it stack up against a ‘real’ camera?       Earlier this year, M*rk sent me this link from the New Yorker.  The basic message was that the smart phone, or specifically the iPhone 5 had now replaced even top…

    Spring in the Japanese Gardens

    ByDMcA April 8, 2014April 9, 2014

Back in the Water Gardens in time for the Spring Blossom – one very fine reason to be back in England.         The Japanese gardens where we live are at their best at this time of year, but they have been a photographic challenge for me ever since we arrived.  At the…

The death of Mandela – Cape Town Pictures

    ByDMcA March 31, 2014April 2, 2014

The scene in Cape Town the weekend after Mandela died – when the great and good of the ANC came out before the TV cameras, and others silently watched.         Nelson Mandela died on Thursday 5th December 2013, at a time when we happened to be in Cape Town.  His death occurred…

Rusting land yachts at the Wijnlands Motor Museum

    ByDMcA March 28, 2014March 28, 2014

Some evocative shots showing the passing of time on several different levels, from an amazing auto graveyard outside Cape Town       I had read about the Wijnlands Motor Museum on the web, and seen some shots of the cars, so on a recce last December to scope out Babylonstoren (needs a separate post…

    Moved!

    ByDMcA March 27, 2014March 31, 2014

This site has changed host location.  Nothing should change except performance.         After a year of exasperation I am changing my web hosting service.  Ever since I started my original site nearly 15 years ago, I have used US-based host systems.  This was originally because the hosting business was much more mature…

Latest News September 2021

“Still alive and able to get about quite well” is the overall report.  We are all fine, albeit with the usual ups and downs.  The site has been spiffed up a bit, and should be faster and easier to navigate.  I might even put some new content on – see What’s happening? for more info.

On other fronts, I think my photography techniques and images have improved quite a lot  over the last 4 years, and I have discovered a fascination for the technical and technique challenges of photographing birds in flight.  Have a look at mcaughtry.photo to see if you agree.  I have also discovered the delights of artisan coffee, and have built a spiffy state of the art digital audiophile music system, all of which I may write about in the future. So no shortage of things to interest or infuriate me.

But most of all my life has been enriched and inspired by my two beautiful and funny grandchildren, 5 and 2 years old as I write.  Why couldn’t I have been like this when I was their age I ask myself?  I am privileged to know them and my heart skips on each encounter.
