London Geometry

Moonrise in Canning TownSome recent photographs which focus on lines and shapes, taken in and around London.

These shots are possibly more ‘urban landscape’ than street photography, in that there is minimal evidence of people and the compositions rely more on shapes than content.  With the exception of the last one, they were taken with my new Nikon V1 camera.  This extremely interesting little item uses a smallish sensor, but has interchangeable lenses. Although of Nikon quality, the lenses are tiny compared to those of a full frame or DX frame camera.  So it’s very easy to carry around with a full set of lenses in your pocket. When needed you can attach the monster Nikon full frame lenses, and that gives it some very unique qualities as I will describe in a future post.  I’m still getting used to it for now, and these shots are my first (usable) ones to result.

So here are the photographs.  As usual, instructions on viewing them are at the end of the post.

This is the first of a series of shots taken in the footsteps of the great Alex Webb, a photographer who I greatly admire.  Webb takes colour street shots of great chromatic contrast and with unsettling, but perfect composition.  Some of his very best work is in his book, The Suffering of Light. • Salt River Sunday

Again with some Street photography.  I chanced upon Salt River railway station while wandering around Woodstock in eastern Cape Town.  A characteristically South African location. I came across it by following some very well dressed people, wondering where they were headed.  Its a huge station, about Clapham Junction sized, in a totally obscure part of…

  • Cape Town Photos Spring 2011

[singlepic id=2 w=534 h=400 float=left]This Spring in Cape Town I got back into serious photography after a lapse of many years.  My focus in the last 10 years or so has been in compact cameras – following the incredible recent technology curve of sensors and lenses.  My main interest was in capturing mountain panoramas,…

  • Riders from the sea

I have wanted to take this shot for a while after having noticed the effect a year or two ago.  The viewpoint is from Kommetjie looking across the bay to Long Beach where the horses are exercised in the morning.  I liked the idea of appearing to see the riders as though from a boat…

  • Mandela’s Funeral

Back again after a longish hiatus (explained below), with shots that capture the emotional scene of Mandela’s funeral, last December in Cape Town.     Apologies for yet another extended and unexplained absence. This time, travel plus a slight diversion into alternative sources of photo publishing has been the reason.  In the last few months…
