Olympics – closing ceremony

Thanks to a very generous friend, I was able to be at the Olympic stadium for the closing ceremony of the main Olympics.  This was a quite bonkers event, but astounding to watch, and wonderful to participate in.  Here are some photos, taken again with the little Canon.

I have not provided captions for the pictures as I had no idea what was going on.  Similarly, there has been no colour balance correction, as the scene was so wildly garish it was not clear what the correct setting was.  The selection of images is based on what looked interesting or came out well, not my favorite parts of the show.  I don’t want you thinking that I am a Spice Girls fan for example.  As usual, the photos are best seen in full screen (press FS in the bottom right hand corner), and in slide show ( press SL).

Today’s photo:The Lonely Tuba player. I was surprised to see a full marching band in Waterloo station recently, all dressed up in Ruritanian-style uniforms. Alone at the back was this single tuba player, and from my angle he looked completely isolated. The morose passengers nearby were also fairly unimpressed.  It would take a full-scale Martian…

Today’s photo:Pont Alexandre III. A long exposure shot of the Seine at the Pont Alexandre III, a wonderfully ornate bridge over the Seine by the Grand Palais in Paris. I liked the way that the low evening sun lit up the gilded parts of the bridge and the statue on the far side. Taken with…

  • Madrid street – chums

Out in the street yesterday with  my Olympus and a fast telephoto lens.  Like so many cities in Europe,  it’s hard to see evidence of the recession in Madrid. Much more obvious in London in fact.  This area of Fuencaral/Malasana has many flourishing speciality shops. I don’t recall whether this one was for dogs or…

  • Chromatic love

Taken in the Bo-Kaap district of Cape Town.  The walls are really that colour. In fact I turned down the brightness and saturation for this shot. The area is very well known, but the residents can rightly be a bit prickly about being blankly photographed as though they are in some kind of zoo.  I…

  • Waiting for the Taxi

Waiting for the taxi OK. This might be a bit messy, but this is the start of an experiment to put a daily or at least fairly frequent photo on the site, using only mobile devices. So this shot was taken on  my little Olympus Pen E-P5, then wirelessly transferred to my very neat Lenovo…
