On second thoughts I think I’ll walk.

Taken on the shoreline facing Butterworth, in Penang. This was quite a tricky shot – the jetty was fantastically unstable, and behind me, at the end of the run, there was a rabid barking dog, which I later had to fend off with the tripod legs.

I couldn’t open the lens out much more, as there was a rather unlovely block at the far end (we are facing back to the shore here), so the bike had to be at the far right of the frame. Getting to a stable enough place to allow a long exposure (only 1.5 minutes) was also a challenge.

After the shot, I had to walk backwards off the jetty for quite a long way, poking the tripod at the snarling dog that was trying to have a go at me. All in all I was glad to get back to terra firma.

For reasons I don’t really understand, this is my most popular photograph on Flickr, with nearly 500 favorites.

  • Smoke

Today’s photo:Smoke. In between the extended periods of summer rain the English like to take their kit off, and lie sparko in the parko having a nice smoke. Shot last summer in the little park adjacent to the Oxo tower in London’s South Bank. I liked the guy’s expansive smoking style, his impressive tattoo and…

  • On Long St

Little bit of street now. As I write, I’m sitting outside Lola’s cafe on the corner of Buiten and Long streets, finishing a rather nice salad nicoise. Or rather what fashionistas call salad nicoise.  A real salad nicoise has more salad than tuna, and the tuna is cooked and shredded on top of mesclun ,…
