London Street Photographs – the Scottish army

20130814 London Street NEX-6 234-Edit_ThumbnailSome recent shots of terrifying looking Scottish football supporters in London.

One day during August, I was on a bus heading into the city to take some architectural shots with my new Nex system, when while passing Trafalgar square, I became aware of a commotion.  Well somewhat more of a commotion – more of a full scale riot, except that everyone was wearing blue and many had kilts on.  This it turned out was a visitation from our friendly Scottish neighbors,  in London for the England-Scotland footer friendly the next day.  They looked incredibly fierce, but the scene looked interesting, so I hopped off, screwed in the excellent 60mm Sigma lens, and started mingling.

Like many Brits, I have had a bit of a problem with street photography, since to do it properly, it requires some level of interpersonal interaction – something we English like to avoid wherever possible.  It was impossible here to avoid interaction – but to my relief, the fans were all a) sober, and b) quite pleasant, while at the same time being c) utterly crazed on the subject of Scotland and their football team.  They all were fine with being photographed, and in general made photogenic, if frightening subjects.  See what you think.

Little bit of street now. As I write, I’m sitting outside Lola’s cafe on the corner of Buiten and Long streets, finishing a rather nice salad nicoise. Or rather what fashionistas call salad nicoise.  A real salad nicoise has more salad than tuna, and the tuna is cooked and shredded on top of mesclun ,…

  • Salt River Sunday

Again with some Street photography.  I chanced upon Salt River railway station while wandering around Woodstock in eastern Cape Town.  A characteristically South African location. I came across it by following some very well dressed people, wondering where they were headed.  Its a huge station, about Clapham Junction sized, in a totally obscure part of…

  • The Dales in January

Some photographs by way of a change of subject from technology.  These shots are of the gorgeous English Dales countryside on a trip to Aysgarth Falls, during one of the wettest and stormiest periods in recent memory, so everything was green and wet (except Norman).  Very English.     As is our wont we spent…

  • Morning, pristine

Today’s picture. Taken at about 8:30am on Noordhoek beach before the arrival of many children.  There are a few things restricting my shots currently. The wind is very strong at the moment, but the skies are clear.    Sand blowing off the beach has a pretty abrasive effect on camera lenses, so its important to stay…
