Some new London Street Photographs with the Nex-6

London Street Photographs Nex-6 - 002I’ve been working and thinking quite a lot about street photography this summer, and developing my technique in a few new areas.  These are some shots in the ‘Cinematic Style’

One of my favorite photographers and writers on photography is  Ming Thein.  He is based in Kuala Lumpur, although I’ve never met him (hope to one day).  He has a very fine eye and a nicely consistent style in his own work, but also writes thoughtfully on the process of taking and making photographs.  In one of his essays, he defined the ‘cinematic style’ as “an abundance of out of focus areas, a narrow/ wide format, and highly directional light”.  The idea of adopting a defined style for shots is an interesting one for me, and one day in June, armed with a new 60mm lens I went out to try to see how that could work.  As MIng comments, it’s not easy to do, but it turned into an exercise in portraying depth in the shot with focus and perspective, and in using light to frame and highlight the subject.  I’m still working on  technique in this area, and have more in the pipeline, but for now here are four shots from that day.

Info about viewing is shown at the end of the post.

Today’s photo:The Lonely Tuba player. I was surprised to see a full marching band in Waterloo station recently, all dressed up in Ruritanian-style uniforms. Alone at the back was this single tuba player, and from my angle he looked completely isolated. The morose passengers nearby were also fairly unimpressed.  It would take a full-scale Martian…

  • Mandela’s Funeral

Back again after a longish hiatus (explained below), with shots that capture the emotional scene of Mandela’s funeral, last December in Cape Town.     Apologies for yet another extended and unexplained absence. This time, travel plus a slight diversion into alternative sources of photo publishing has been the reason.  In the last few months…

  • Salt River Sunday

Again with some Street photography.  I chanced upon Salt River railway station while wandering around Woodstock in eastern Cape Town.  A characteristically South African location. I came across it by following some very well dressed people, wondering where they were headed.  Its a huge station, about Clapham Junction sized, in a totally obscure part of…

Today’s photo:Smoke. In between the extended periods of summer rain the English like to take their kit off, and lie sparko in the parko having a nice smoke. Shot last summer in the little park adjacent to the Oxo tower in London’s South Bank. I liked the guy’s expansive smoking style, his impressive tattoo and…
