How to order in Madrid
I have learned two new things in the last 24 hours about Madrid. (1). Always order a drink first if dining in a tapas bar/restaurant. Wait until the free tapas arrives. Then order another drink, and then later, the food. If in the English way you order food, then a drink, you don’t seem to get the free delicious tapas. This way you are p*ssed before the meal starts but then so are the Spanish (2). But at breakfast order the food first. Only when it arrives, order the coffee. This is because the coffee always seems to come instantly, but the tostados or whatever take up to 30 minutes (if they arrive at all) by which time the coffee is drunk or cold. By means of these feeble strategems I eke out my time in this foreign city.
